Sambucus canadensis

Variety description: Native to the the margins of wetlands throughout much of the United States. We propagated these plants from vigorous, prolific wild shrubs found growing near our nursery in Thomaston, CT. Performs well under cultivation even in drier soils if the roots are kept well mulched. Bunches of small white flowers attract pollinators in early summer. If left unpicked, berries make great forage for birds in late summer.

Grows into a large shrub nearly 8′ tall and 5′ wide in just a few years. Plant in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, organically rich soil.

Dark purple-black, ripe berries do make excellent jams and jellies. Elderberry wine, aged at least a year, is a delicious nectar. An old family remedy for colds is a shot of warm elderberry wine before bed. Sure to cure what ails you!

Plant size: 18″ tall with a well developed root system. Will likely produce fruit the second season in the ground if given good care.
