Name in Chinese and pinyin: 紅冠玉珠 Hong Guan Yu Zhu
Notable characteristics: Multi-layered anemone double blossoms, with the distinctive dark purple rockii flair at the base of the guard petals. These rosy, magenta red blossoms are well supported by the stiff stems of this upright growing and vigorous cultivar.
Hybridizer, year introduced: Rockii group, this cultivar was hybridized by Chen Dezhong at the Peace Peony Garden in Lanzhou, Gansu province.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright habit, to 4.5′ tall and 3′ wide.
Flower form and size: Anemone form double flowers, 7-9″.
Flower fragrance: Sweet, clove-like fragrance.
Bloom time: Mid-season Chinese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the third or fourth week of May.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 4-9. P. rockii cultivars are particularly drought resistant once established.
Plant size: 1 year old grafted tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a graft root. The plant may or may not have some of its own roots already developed. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
