Name in Chinese: 鐵桿紫 Tie Gan Zi
Notable characteristics: Luscious dark red blossoms held up on strong, distinctive red stems. Stems stay dark red all season, and do not change to green like most herbaceous peonies, hence its name. Very rare cultivar.
Cultivar group, hybridizer and year introduced: Lactiflora, a classical cultivar from the peony growing center of Luoyang in Henan province.
Growth habit and size at maturity: Lower growing symmetrical bush, to 30″ tall and 30″ wide.
Flower form and size: Will bloom as a 5-6″ semi-double when young, and double form as it matures.
Flower fragrance: Very sweet and spicy.
Bloom time: Mid-season herbaceous peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the last week of May to early June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 3-8.
Plant size: 4-5 eye plant with a proportional root system. This size plant will very likely flower its first or second spring in the ground.
