Morus alba x rubra
Variety description: An exceptionally hardy black fruited cultivar introduced by St. Lawrence Nursery in Potsdam, NY. Original tree dates to the 1850s and has survived temperatures of -50° F.
Site requirements: Full sun location. Like other fruit trees, mulberries will do well in fertile, well drained soil. Soil pH of 6.5 is ideal.
Hardiness: USDA zones 3-9. Winter dieback may occur the first few years in the coldest areas. In such a location, a protective winter mulch is recommended when the tree is young.
Size at maturity: With training when young and semi-annual pruning, mulberries can be maintained at 15-20′. The original ‘Northrup’ tree is now 70′ tall, but has taken almost 170 years to reach this height!
Plant size: Own-root tree, 1-2 ft. tall with strong central leader.
