Morus alba x rubra ‘Gerardi Dwarf’
Variety description: A dwarf, slow growing mulberry ideal for small gardens. Growth between internodes (space between buds) is only an inch or less, on full size mulberries it can be 5-6″. Fruit is full sized, sweet and juicy with the vinous quality that characterises the best mulberries.
Somewhat rare tree. Originally introduced by Louis Gerardi of Gerardi Nursery in Illinois.
Site requirements: Full sun location. Like other fruit trees, mulberries will do well in fertile, well drained soil. Soil pH of 6.5 is ideal.
Hardiness: USDA zones 6-9. This cultivar is less hardy than other selections of M. alba.
Size at maturity: Slow growing tree reaches about 8′ tall and 8′ wide in several decades.
Plant size: Grafted tree, 2-3′ tall. Field grown, ships bare root.
