Variety description: This hybrid between the North American native Catalpa bignonioides and the Chinese species C. ovata originated in France in the late 19th century. Large heart-shaped leaves emerge in the spring dark purple-black. As the season progresses, older leaves turn to a dark green.
This fast growing tree is best suited for larger spaces. If left to its own devices, this tree will grow into a majestic specimen, 40-50′ tall with a 40-50′ spread.
Size can be greatly reduced, to the size of a large shrub, with a hard annual prune in the early spring.
Height and Spread at Maturity: Dependent on pruning.
Site requirements: Full sun or part shade location. Prefers moist soils high in organic content, but will grow well in many soil types.
Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9.
Plant size: Grafted tree, 18-24″ with strong central leader. Grown in a 4″ x 9″ tree tube.
