Name in Japanese & romaji: 墨の一 Suma-no-ichi
Notable characteristics: Dark red Japanese cultivar which dates from the early 20th century. The name translates to ‘Darkest Ink.’ Like many other of the very dark flowered varieties, this one is slow growing and somewhat dwarf.
Hybridizer: Unknown.
Growth habit and size at maturity (10 years old): Upright. Flowers held well above the foliage. Grows to 36″ tall and wide.
Flower form and size: Single, 6″.
Flower fragrance: Light and sweet.
Bloom time: Mid-season Japanese tree peony, blooms in our USDA zone 6a garden in the first week of June.
Zone hardiness: Proven in USDA zones 5-9.
Plant size: 1 year old grafted tree peonies have 1 woody stem, with offshoot buds, and a graft root. The plant may or may not have some of its own roots already developed. This one may bloom its first spring in the ground, or will wait until the second spring.
